ESJV n e w s l e t t e r February 2009

Dear Member, As I start my term as President of the European Society for Jet Ventilation, I am pleased to continue the successful work of my predecessors, as well as propose a few new initiatives of my own. Reflecting on the accomplishments and successes of the past year, in the name of all members, I have to pay special credit to the former president, Professor Dr. Gerald Ihra, who guided the ESJV very successfully during the last 4 years. Special thanks to Professor Ihra for his commitment!

As organizer of the Heidelberg Airway Symposium, I am particularly proud of the exceptional educational program ESJV offered at its Biannual Meeting in conjunction with the Heidelberg Airway Symposium last fall. The meeting attended by more than 120 Anaesthesiologists, ENT specialists, Paediatric intensivists and ESJV members was a testament to ESJV continued commitment to offer educational program that is both relevant and cutting edge for practicing anaesthesiologists and specialists. Outstanding main lectures on technical, clinical and experimental aspects of jet ventilation provided an ideal platform to gain knowledge and share experiences. Residents in training and anaesthesiologists were excited by the hands on workshops on airway management and practical aspects of jet ventilation. The Poster Session integrated into the Heidelberg Symposium has been another new exciting European Society for Jet Ventilation initiative, which served as a new forum to exchange and share new information and ideas concerning jet ventilation.

Looking through these past accomplishments, I am reminded that none of these could have been possible without the invaluable dedication and service of our previous board and speakers who so generously volunteer their time and knowledge for the benefit of our society.

The general assembly elected a new board for the term 2009-2010. As an international European society, the board members are working in different European countries, Vice-President, Dr. Gerhard BAER, in Tampere, Finland and Treasurer Dr. Robert LEITER, in Uppsala University Hospital, Sweden.

The term ahead will be filled with continued improvements, designed to enhance member value and to increase number of memberships. In order to meet these accomplishments, I am suggesting an informal meeting open to all ESJV members at the ESA meeting in Milano. Further information on this meeting will follow.

We are looking ahead to the next biannual meeting 2010 in celebration of the 10th anniversary of the ESJV foundation.

Without your continued support as an ESJV member it would not be able to continue the important work necessary to ensure the future success of jet ventilation.

The board is open to all ideas and suggestions for future development are welcome. You are invited to actively form our society to our vision and mission, improve the knowledge and further develop jet ventilation.

With that in mind, allow me to wish in the tradition of old Heidelberg students

Vivat, crescat, floreat European Society for Jet Ventilation

Yours faithfully

Johann Motsch

ESJV n e w s l e t t e r October 2008

On behalf of the board of the European Society for Jet Ventilation and the scientific committee of the Airway Symposium in Heidelberg 2008  it is my pleasure to invite you to this meeting and the 5th General Assembly of the ESJV at the DKFZ in Heidelberg,  a wonderful city at the river  Neckar with Germany’s oldest university based there (founded in 1386).

The target audience of this meeting includes residents in training and specialists in both anaesthesiology and ENT surgery. There will be outstanding main lectures on essential airway topics including technical, experimental and clinical aspects of jet ventilation, time for discussion, and airway management workshops to provide a perfect opportunity to share experiences and knowledge.

A recently published national survey of the use of high-pressure source ventilation in the UK demonstrated a considerable potential for adverse events during  jet ventilation and that there is ongoing clinical debate about the use and how to avoid serious complications (Brit J Anaesth 101:266). Wide variations in clinical practice were reported and guideline development is warranted. Technical limitations to measure airway pressure during jet application appear to be the major drawback of this method. In view of these data several aspects of jet ventilation have to be discussed. Increasing patient safety and improving patient outcome are important objectives of research and training of techniques to manage the normal or compromised airway. Future efforts of the ESJV should therefore concentrate on the development of such guidelines based on the consensus of clinical experts cooperating with technical engineers at platforms provided such as the forthcoming meeting in Heidelberg.

In view of these latest findings, I am convinced that the attractive scientific and educational programme will assure an exciting discussion. The unique historical background of this fantastic city will guarantee a most pleasant stay.

I look forward to welcoming you in Heidelberg.

Yours faithfully

Gerald Ihra

ESJV n e w s l e t t e r June 2008

One of the major aims of the ESJV is to provide information on various aspects of jet ventilation to secure and improve patient’s safety and quality of care. Therefore, a new article can be found on the ESJV’s homepage reviewing some of the basic characteristics of jet ventilation and giving a  historical insight into its technical developments. On behalf of the ESJV Board, I am very grateful for this contribution composed by one of Europe’s well known experts on jet ventilation, Gerhard Baer from Finland. On this occasion, I once again like to express my gratitude to all of our enthusiastic members, who actively participate in the ESJV projects.

At the beginning of the summer holidays season, I wish all of you some days of a relaxing and peaceful atmosphere to recreate from everyday clinical routine in a high-risk work environment.

Yours faithfully

ESJV n e w s l e t t e r Juli 2007

At this year's ESA meeting in Munich a small group of representatives of the ESJV, EAMS and the University of Heidelberg met to get started with the preparations for our next meeting, which will take place from 21st to 22nd of November, 2008 at the German Cancer Research Institute in Heidelberg. As a main step towards a broader engagement of colleagues this time we decided to address anaesthesiologists and ENT surgeons, and outstanding lecturers from both fields will be invited during the next months. A preliminary program was outlined to be presented on the ESJV website soon, and Prof. Johann Motsch as the organizer of the forthcoming conference proposed to provide highly interesting sessions and workshops at a very affordable participation fee.

Heidelberg will be a great location for the 5 th ESJV congress. With its 140,000 inhabitants, the town is well known all over the world for its romanticism and beauty. Not only is Germany's oldest university based here (established in 1386) but also a number of outstanding research institutions such as the German Cancer Research Center, the University's research institutes, EMBL, EURESCOM, four Max Planck Institutes and the research centres of big companies. Heidelberg stands not only for a world- famous castle, for Germany's oldest university and for lanes steeped in history in the Old Town but also for a modern scientific and economic location with an international reputation and a most lively and varied cultural scene. With its glorious natural setting at the river Neckar situated in the midst of hills, Heidelberg is regarded as one of the most beautiful cities in Germany attracting people from all over the world.

As outlined in our last newsletter, all members are invited to send their suggestions or suspicions concerning gas conditioning of jet streams (pros & cons) to the ESJVs board. Industry is working to improve technical standards to further improve the treatment of our patients, and readily acknowledges our expert's ideas. Once again I encourage and welcome your support in order to stimulate the process of improving and developing our standards. The success of the ESJV also depends on the financial contributions, the active's fee has been set to 30 or 15 €.

Finally, I announce the next General Assembly of the ESJV which will be held on 21 st November during the Heidelberg Airway Symposium 2008.

I wish the organizers of the Heidelberg meeting all the best for their preparations, and for those of you starting into their summer holidays soon a relaxing time to recreate,

Yours faithfully

ESJV n e w s l e t t e r Januar 2007

The General Assembly of the ESJV took place during the 4th Biannual Meeting of the Society and the UCL ENT Anaesthesia Course 2006 on November 30th at the UCL Ear Institute,
Gray's Inn Rd, London, UK.

I welcomed the members of the ESJV to the General Assembly. After the President’s and Treasurer’s reports presenting a cash flow that was positive for 2005 and 2006, Prof. Johann Motsch was elected unanimously as the new vicepresident. Born in Austria, he studied Medicine at the University of Vienna, became Professor of Anaesthesia in Homburg-Saar in 1988, and now works at the University of Heidelberg since 1991. He is a jet ventilation specialist and member of the society from the very beginning. Prof. Motsch suggested the University Campus of Heidelberg as the next meeting place for 2008 and will thereby be the organizer of the 5th ESJV congress.

Furthermore, all attending members agreed to seek a more close cooperation with the European Airway Management Society EAMS founded in Lisbon 2004. This could result in a benefit for both young societies developmental and organisational work, aiming at promotion of best training and management of the airway in Europe.  Prof. Peter Biro and Prof. Johann Motsch will contact the EAMS in this regard. Prof. C. Ferguson’s proposal to install an online forum of discussion dealing with a special jet ventilation topic was readily supported by all members. The problem of gas conditioning of jet streams was suggested to be discussed, and pros & cons, as well as technical and clinical aspects of this online exchange of ideas will be presented at the next ESJV’s meeting.

There is an increasing interest from the industrie in the ESJV activities, which I hereby encourage and welcome in order to stimulate the process of improving established and developing new techniques to support our colleagues and to help our patients.

The two-day UCL course lectures covered Endoscopy and Laser/Voice Surgery, LMA for ENT Anaesthesia, Craniofacial/Head & Neck Surgery, Anaesthesia for Sleep Apnoea and practical theatre sessions including tonsillectomy, adenoidectomy, nasal and ear surgery with LMA, airway surgery with jet ventilation and its basics. According to the assessment by the participants the anaesthesia course was an outstanding success. Therefore, I thank Anil Patel and Prof. C. Ferguson, and their team for the perfect organisation of the meeting.

Finally, I thank the members of the ESJV for their continuing support and the board members for their contributions and look forward for an inspiring year 2007.
